Isabella recently visited the Steelers and met Coach Mike Tomlin, took part in the Browns’ April 12 pro day (but didn’t do any drills) and went through a workout with the Chiefs at SPIRE in Geneva, where he also showed off his abilities as a punt returner. By the time he was a senior, he had 102 receptions for 1,698 yards and 13 touchdowns, was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award (given to the nation’s top receiver), and made seven All-America teams. However, he worked his way from a converted running back to one of the nation’s best receivers with blazing speed. That seemed like a stretch when Isabella left Mayfield four years ago for UMass, the only FBS to offer him a scholarship. When Isabella is selected, he will be the school’s first draft pick in 45 years. University of Michigan product Jim Coode was picked in the seventh round in 1974 by the Atlanta Falcons, but opted to play for the Ottawa Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. In the 1960s, Peter Johns was picked by the Houston Oilers, and Ohio State product Daryl Sanders was selected by the Detroit Lions with the 12th overall pick in the 1963 NFL Draft. According to Athletic Director Keith Leffler, the school has produced three draft picks. Mayfield’s draft history goes back more than 50 years.

“That’s why my head is spinning everywhere,” he said.

Layne’s nice size (he’s 6-foot-2 3/4) and playmaking ability make him an intriguing cornerback prospect. Mike Woods was the 52nd overall pick in the 1978 draft. Some draft projections have Layne being picked by the Browns with the 49th overall pick in Round 2, and if that happens he will be the highest drafted player in Benedictine history. According to Benedictine football historian Wally Mieskoski, Layne will be the 18th player in school history drafted by the NFL or the American Football League. The same is being said about Layne, an All-Big Ten cornerback from Michigan State who’s a graduate of Benedictine.īenedictine has a history of producing NFL players. Isabella, an All-America receiver from University of Massachusetts and a Mayfield graduate, should go anywhere between Rounds 2 and 3. It’s the day they are expected to be selected during Day 2 of the 2019 NFL Draft in Nashville, Tenn. April 26 is the day Andy Isabella and Justin Layne have both likely had circled on their calendars for some time.
